Onglyza contains the active ingredient saxagliptin, and saxagliptin belongs to a group of medicines called "oral anti-diabetes medicines." It works by helping to control the level of sugar in the blood. It is used for adult patients 18 years of age and over with type 2 diabetes, if the disease cannot be adequately controlled with a single oral diabetes medication, diet and exercise. It is used alone or with insulin or other anti-diabetic medications.Warnings:- If you are allergic to saxagliptin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine- If you have had a serious allergic reaction to any other similar medicines that you are taking to control blood sugar.- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking saxagliptin:- If you are taking insulin- If you have type 1 diabetes (your body does not make any insulin) or diabetic ketoacidosis- If you have or have ever had a disease of the pancreas.- If you are taking insulin or an anti-diabetic medicine known as a sulfonylurea.- If you suffer from heart failure or have other risk factors for heart failure, such as kidney problems.- If you have impaired kidney function.- If you have moderate or severe liver problems
