Blood Pressure Lowering Medications

How Spironolactone Works

An aldosterone antagonist with diuretic and blood pressure-lowering properties; it prevents aldosterone from binding to its receptors in the distal nephron, increasing the excretion of Na+, Cl-, and water while retaining K+ and H+, thus enhancing urine output, which reduces blood volume and blood pressure over time.

  • For treating patients with nephrotic syndrome: a kidney disorder causing excessive fluid retention.
